Head of Talent @ Heartbeat Health
Heartbeat Health is a Virtual-First cardiology solution revolutionizing the delivery of cardiovascular care. Cardiology, like many specialties, is reactive with a focus on advanced illness; Heartbeat’s Virtual-First model delivers early and preventive care before heart health conditions develop and progress. They leverage real-time clinical data and device connectivity to diagnose and deliver proactive heart care — helping provider groups and healthcare organizations identify, monitor, and manage cardiovascular care for their at-risk member populations.
In 2021, Heartbeat raised a $20 million Series B from top healthcare investors including Lerer Hippeau, .406 Ventures, and Echo Health Ventures.
Like many fast-growing HealthTech companies, Heartbeat Health wanted to accelerate their product research and development but faced a talent shortage. Heartbeat’s product and engineering teams work closely alongside medical board-certified cardiologists, so candidates with healthcare domain-focused skills were key. Unfortunately, their Talent Acquisition team didn’t have the internal capacity to source enough qualified candidates.
With fit being critical for a small, hypergrowth startup and the clock ticking to keep up with the demand of their thousands of patients nationwide, Heartbeat initially turned to recruiting agencies for support. However, the candidates presented to them hardly ever had the qualifications to succeed at Heartbeat.
After failing to make substantial hires with traditional recruiting methods, Heartbeat started investigating more modern sourcing techniques and came across Celential’s artificial intelligence approach. Heartbeat decided to partner with Celential because they automate top-of-the-funnel candidate sourcing – easing the allocation of limited resources for companies to develop meaningful candidate relationships.
Given the high expectations and a specialized role skillset, Celential’s AI-powered Virtual Recruiter tapped into its proprietary Talent Graph that covers 10M software engineers in North America to source passive candidates traditional agencies couldn’t.
Starting from the first week of the partnership, the Virtual Recruiter identified strong engineer profiles that not only match the job requirements but also fit well with the functional teams and the company. It then sent out personalized outreach to generate a list of warm candidates, who were interested in Heartbeat’s opportunities and ready to interview with the team.
Celential was able to deliver 29 warm candidates per month during the initial 3.5-month partnership. With this volume of quality candidates, Heartbeat was able to make 4 critical hires for the frontend, backend, DevOps, and data engineer roles at the senior or lead level.
As a company dedicated to creating an inclusive and flexible remote work experience, candidate experience was particularly important to Heartbeat. Celential’s hyper-personalized candidate outreach is tailored to each candidate’s career experience and pitches the mutual fit for the role. It built a positive first impression from the moment of contact and gave the perfect lay-up to their recruiting team to start the interview process.
With Celential’s customized plan, Heartbeat can easily scale their recruiting capacity up and down depending on their hiring needs. When they initially began the partnership, they only had two hires planned — but goals changed and they needed two more without delay. Celential met the demand on short notice even when role prioritization switched.
To ensure an efficient process for candidate presentation, feedback, and scheduling, Celential’s account manager worked closely with Heartbeat’s Talent Acquisition team to meet their workflows. Part of this dedicated approach was offering additional support to collect candidates’ availability after they were accepted for interviews. As a result, Heartbeat was able to shorten their interview scheduling process and focus on candidate engagement.
